Council votes to demolish Sands Motel

The old Sands Motel will be demolished.

City council has awarded a contract worth $149,641.75 to Ed Seguin and Sons Trucking and Paving Ltd. for the demolition of the abandoned motel and an adjacent building on McIntyre Street.

This is the end of what has been a years-long process in regards to the fate of the motel.

The city notified the property owner they were in violation of the city’s property standards in June of 2019, ordering them to remedy the buildings.

The property owner appealed the order, with the Property Standards Committee confirming the demolition in May of last year.

The project was then delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the city opening the application process for demolition in February.

“The award of this contract will result in the removal of two vacant buildings that remain in a state of disrepair,” the staff report to council states.

Now that the contract is approved, the demolition process will begin as soon as all required contract documents are completed.
