Ice breakup “more severe” than previous years

UPDATE: 2 pm, March 31st, 2021

King’s Landing will be closed to vehicular traffic for the next “several” weeks.

Gord Young confirmed the news Wednesday afternoon, saying the closure is pending a “detailed structural analysis” on the wharf which can only be done when the ice melts.

Pedestrian traffic is still permitted on the wharf.

The annual breakup of frozen Lake Nipissing has brought a large amount of ice onto King’s Landing at the North Bay Waterfront.

Gord Young, Communications Officer for the City of North Bay, says he hasn’t seen ice like this in a few years.

“It does happen from time to time during the ice breakup,” he said. “This year it is a little more severe than it has been in past years.”

Young says the lake’s ice breakup mixed with winds can occasionally cause the ice to climb up the walls of the wharf.

The city does annual inspections of King’s Landing, with a city engineer expected to assess the situation this week.

“Once he has a look, we’ll have an idea of damages,” Young confirmed.
