Several issues will be up for discussion involving the Nipissing-Timiskaming federal election candidates next week.
All five candidates are taking part in an online debate being hosted by the Nipissing University Political Science Program and the Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU).
The debate is taking place at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 7th.
“What we’re really wanting our students to see is that their votes really matter and also for it to be an informed vote as well. We’re really hoping that not only students, but the general community can have the exposure to the candidates so they find out what their policies are and they can hear from them directly,” she says.
McGowan says the questions will cover education and a host of other topics too.
“Foreign policy, healthcare, the economy, the environment as well as Indigenous issues. We’re really trying to allow the voters to make an informed decision and hopefully one of those topics will resonate with them when they are deciding who to vote for,” she says.
NUSU says candidates from the following parties have been invited (in alphabetical order):
- Greg Galante (People’s Party of Canada)
- Alexander Gomm (Green Party)
- Scott Robertson (New Democratic Party)
- Anthony Rota (Liberal Party of Canada)
- Steve Trahan (Conservative Party of Canada)
Moderator Tanya Matthews is a political science student at Nipissing University.
The mother of four is from the Algonquin Nation Abitibi Anishinabek (Algonquin and Cree descent) from Wahgoshig First Nation.
