SIU closes investigation into May arrest

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has found no reasonable grounds to charge a police officer after the arrest of a man in North Bay this spring.

The SIU says on May 5th, an officer with the Ontario Provincial Police Emergency Response Team (ERT) discharged an ARWEN anti-riot weapon while arresting a man wanted for violent and firearm-related offences.

A release from the SIU says the man was not struck and was not physically injured.

He was arrested without further incident.

Back in May, the SIU reported both provincial and city police officers surrounded a vehicle in the parking lot of a business on Lakeshore Drive.

The SIU said when the man refused to exit the vehicle, an OPP officer discharged his ARWEN at the vehicle.

“In the result, as there are no reasonable grounds to believe that the Subject Official (SO) comported himself other than lawfully throughout his engagement with the Complainant, there is no basis for proceeding with criminal charges against the officer. The file is closed,” writes Joseph Martino, Director of the SIU in his report.
