The North Bay and District Chamber of Commerce is disappointed with two aspects of the provincial hike to minimum wage.
Premier Doug Ford announced Tuesday that Ontario’s lowest wage earners will start making $15 per hour on January 1, 2022.
That’s up from $14.35 right now.
Peter Chirico, President and CEO of the local business group, says the timing of the wage increase is one concern.
“With many businesses still grappling with the ongoing impact of the pandemic, including cash flow and the cost of doing business, is this the best time to be adding? I don’t think there’s a best time,” he says.
Chirico also says businesses weren’t consulted on the issue either.
“Certainly we’re in favour of fair compensation,” he says. “But, done in consultation and unfortunately this seems to just be an announcement out of the blue.”
Chiricio is also encouraging residents to shop and support local businesses.
“When we look at the supply chain there are certains costs that have gone up dramatically. Just look at the price of gas, for instance. All the businesses that are trying to make it through are getting hit and hit and hit, and that’s why it’s important that we support local,” he says.
Wages for servers and bartenders will also be hiked to $15 per hour, up from the current $12.55.
