Candle safety reminders after Monday night fire

City fire officials are reminding residents that candles are a leading cause of house fires, especially around the Christmas season.

This after a fire in an apartment unit on the 100-block of Third Avenue West Monday night.

“It appears that the occupant had knocked over a candle which caught the table on fire and extended to the floor of the unit,” says Greg Saunders, Deputy Fire Chief, in a release.  “Firefighters were on scene in under three minutes, entered the unit, and very quickly extinguished the fire.”

He says the quick response limited damage to the unit.

Safety tips from North Bay Fire and Emergency Services involving candles include:

  1. 1. Never leave a burning candle unattended
  2. Make sure to use a suitable holder
  3. Keep candles at least a 24” clearance away from combustible materials
  4. Keep candles out of the reach of kids and pets
  5. Don’t move lit candles
  6. Always have a working smoke alarm
