Kitchen fire on Cedar Heights Road “could have been much worse”

A fire at a house on Cedar Heights Road East has resulted in a homeowner being charged for not having working smoke alarms.

North Bay Fire and Emergency Services responded at 11:30 pm Monday night and found the home was full of smoke when they arrived.

“The two occupants and their dog had safely evacuated the home after using two fire extinguishers to extinguish the majority of the fire,” says Greg Saunders, Deputy Chief, in a release. “Firefighters entered the home, extinguished any remaining fire, and cleared the home of the significant amount of smoke and products of combustion that was produced by the fire.”

Saunders says the fire caused significant damage to the kitchen of the home and the cause was an accidental activation of the stove.

He says the occupants did inhale some smoke and were treated by paramedics on the scene.

“The fire could have been much worse as there were no working smoke alarms in the home,” says Saunders.  “The owner of the home has been charged for the failure to have properly located, properly maintained smoke alarms as required by law.”

He adds Ontario is on track to have the worst year in its history when it comes to the number of fire fatalities in the province.

Saunders says smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms provide early notification of an emergency, will alert you to the danger, and provide you with the time to safely evacuate from your residence.
