Food Banks Canada says food insecurity should be an election issue

With the election less than three weeks away, Food Banks Canada is calling on the federal parties to commit to cutting food insecurity in half by 2030.

The group that represents 5,500 food banks across the country says almost a quarter of Canadians are living with food insecurity, adding that’s likely an underestimate of the true proportion.

The group says this month alone, over two million people will visit food banks, which are buckling under the strain of increased demand.

Officials say tariffs, cost-of-living increases and incomes that haven’t kept pace highlight the urgency of immediate support.

Meantime, the local army cadets food drive, originally scheduled for tonight (April 8) has been postponed until Tuesday, April 15.

They’ll be collecting donations for the North Bay Food Bank that evening from 6-8 pm, canvassing neighbourhoods in the centre of the city.
