City police warning of business-related scam emails

The North Bay Police Service is warning about recent reports of business-related scam requests involving compromised email addresses.

It involves fraudsters using email to trick business employees into transferring money or sensitive information.

Police say it typically involves impersonating someone the victim trusts like a CEO, known vendor or co-worker.

They say red flags often include:

  • Urgent or confidential requests
  • Large amounts requested through e-transfers
  • Not following normal procedures for payment
  • Unusual payment methods or destinations
  • Minor differences in the domains e.g. using a “5” instead of an “S”

Before sending any money, police suggest contacting the person who is making the request by phone or by entering their email address manually, not hitting “reply”.
