Voodoos targeting another successful season as camp kicks off

Four months after a franchise-first NOJHL championship and a trip to the Dudley-Hewitt Cup, the Powassan Voodoos are back on the ice, preparing to defend their title.

Thirty players attended the first day of camp for fitness testing and skating at the Powassan Sportsplex, last Thursday and were back on the ice Friday.

Beau Moyer was pleased with his group and said he was taking advantage of the opportunity to mesh some of the new additions with the returning players. “It was great to have such a great core group bring a solid effort and being welcoming to the new players, seeing new players like [Harrison] Israels, [Aaron] Dickson and [Tyler] Gilberds and [Eric] Mondoux skate with our key returning pieces,” said Moyer.

“The veterans seemed energized and ready to go, while the rookies came out trying to make an impression.  It was a great first day of training camp,” observed Voodoos GM Chris Dawson, who was impressed with the way the veterans meshed with some of the new younger players.

The Voodoos will ramp up camp next week as they will play three exhibition games in three days.

  • Wednesday, Aug. 30, the Voodoos will travel to Noelville to take on the French River Rapids before returning home for a pair of matinees.
  • Thursday, Aug. 31, the OJHL’s Kingston Voyageurs will make a stop at the Powassan Sportsplex as they take on the Voodoos for a 2 p.m. game.
  • Friday, Sept. 1, the French River Rapids will pay a return visit to the Sportsplex as they clash with the Voodoos for another 2 p.m. affair.
