You may soon be able to set off fireworks on New Year’s Eve and other special occasions inside city limits.
Council voted Tuesday night to direct staff to amend the city’s fireworks bylaw to permit the sale and use on New Year’s Eve, as well as develop a “special occasions” permit.
The motion was brought forward by councillor Marcus Tignanelli, who says he spoke with a business owner who highlighted concerns of people buying fireworks in other districts on New Year’s Eve and setting them off inside the city.
Tignanelli added a user fee for special occasions, such as weddings or birthdays, could be an additional source of income for the city.
Deputy mayor Tanya Vrebosch, while supporting the motion, suggested further education on the safe use of fireworks be included in the amended bylaw.
Currently, By-Law 2010-146 dictates the days on which fireworks can be sold in the city. Those include the seven days leading up to and including Canada Day, Victoria Day and the August Civic Holiday.
Councillor Mark King was the lone member to vote against the motion.
Staff will now prepare a report outlining the details of the amended bylaw which will then be voted on by council for finalization.
