Philip and Princess Elizabeth landed in North Bay on October 29, 1951, and were greeted by the famous Dionne Quintuplets.
From the airport, Philip and Elizabeth were greeted by 12,000 children and several other onlookers as they toured the town.
“While in Memorial Park, Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip signed North Bay’s guest register and received gifts from the city (a pair of beaver gauntlets for Princess Elizabeth and a beaver hat for the Duke of Edinburgh) in front of 7000 onlookers,” the museum’s archived news article states.
The Royal visit was scheduled to be 30 minutes long but reportedly ended up taking 80 minutes.
The two returned to North Bay in 1997 to visit Canadore College. Prince Philip also stopped in North Bay during a stopover in 1987.
