Testing alarms the focus for Fire Prevention Week

Local residents are being challenged to push the test button on smoke and carbon monoxide alarms during Fire Prevention Week.

That call from North Bay Fire and Emergency Services (NBFES) which is urging residents to test the alarms monthly to learn the sound they make.

NBFES says if there is no sound the batteries should be replaced and if the alarms still don’t work, the device itself should be replaced.

Safety tips being offered by NBFES to help you “Learn the Sounds of Fire SafetyTM” include:

  • A continuous set of three loud beeps—beep, beep, beep—means smoke or fire. Get out, call 9-1-1, and stay out.
  • A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the battery is low and must be changed.
  • All smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years – carbon monoxide alarms every 7 years.
  • Chirping that continues after the battery has been replaced means the alarm is at the end of its life and the unit must be replaced.
  • Make sure your smoke and CO alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those who may not hear an alarm sounding.

Fire Prevention Week runs from October 3rd to 9th.

Local fire crews will be at Parker’s Your Independent Grocer on Wednesday October 6, from 10 am to 6 pm to ‘Fill A Fire Truck’ with food for the North Bay Food Bank.
